Graduate School Policy Changes

The Graduate Council recently approved several policy changes that bring Auburn’s policies into alignment with commonly accepted standards and practices for degree programs.  Some of these changes result from an external review of Graduate School policies.

A brief description of the changes is provided here. Click the policy name to see the complete policy as it will appear in the bulletin.

Academic Standing: Students who go on academic probation now have two terms, excluding the summer term (previously the summer term was counted) or eleven semester hours (previously students had only nine hours), to bring their GPA back up to 3.0.  The policy change addresses the fact that summer course offerings are sometimes limited and that nine hours limited international students to a single term in which to raise their GPA.  This change is effective immediately.

Advisory Committees: (1) A fourth graduate faculty member is now required for doctoral advisory committees.  Previously, three committee members were required.   (2) A doctoral advisory committee may include no more than one non-Auburn University affiliated committee member, who must hold a terminal degree in the field.  Previously, there was no provision for external committee members.  (3) The committee chair (or one of the co-chairs) for all advisory committees must be a graduate faculty member in the program granting the degree. Previously there was no program restriction.  These changes are effective for all Plans of Study approved after Fall semester 2011.

Course Requirements and Transfer Credit: A majority of the course work listed on the student’s plan of study must be completed at Auburn University.  This policy change is required for compliance with SACS standards.  This change is effective for all Plans of Study approved after Fall semester 2011.

Plan of Study: The deadline for filing a plan of study has been extended to at least one term prior to the term in which the student plans to graduate.   Previously, the deadline was unrealistically short.  This change is effective immediately.
